Big Game Weekend

Saturday 21st – Sunday 22nd August 2010 FREE EVENT at the National Museum of the Royal Navy (Portsmouth Historic Dockyard) Following on from the success of Armed Forces Day and the Pepys Show earlier in the year, the National Museum of the Royal Navy will once again transform Victory Arena at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, to welcome visitors to a FREE event – Big Game Weekend, on the 21st and 22nd August. Visitors of all ages are invited to join in the fun and games with an impressive giant game of the classic ‘Battleships’, quoits, bowls, ‘float a boat’, face painting, the traditional game of uckers and other naval favourites from throughout the ages. There is a stunningly created giant version of the snake and ladders style board game ”From Sailor boy to Admiral”, which includes the original drawings lovingly recreated. The original version dating back to around 1895-1900, will also be on display. For the older members of the family there is the opportunity to see ‘Tokyo Rose’ with her Pacific war game in the Victory Gallery. ‘Tokyo Rose’ was a Japanese radio propaganderist and quite popular during the Second World War. This delightfully drawn and slightly risqué board game was created by sailors on board the Australian escort sloop HMAS Warrego and dates back to around 1945. Stephen Courtney, Curator of Photographs and Event Organiser for the weekend commented “This is a new event for us. The giant games have been great fun to make and I hope that our visitors enjoy playing them just as much as we have!” There truly is something for everyone! KIDS GO FREE THIS AUGUST AT THE NEEDLES OLD BATTERY Looking for something fun and exciting to do in the holidays? Then look no further. During August your kids can enjoy free visits plus lots of fun activities at the National Trust’s Needles Old Battery. Follow the soldier trail, borrow a family discovery pack or dress up as a Victorian solider working with barrels of gunpowder. Explore the twisty tunnel, discover the Battery’s nooks and crannies and imagine firing the big guns on the Parade Ground. Then have a leisurely picnic on the grassy bank overlooking the Needles rocks or better still, treat yourself with a visit to our cliff top tea room before enjoying the stroll back along the cliff path with its dramatic across the Solent. Spinnaker Tower Summer Fun!

A GUARANTEED Summer seaside Sizzler at the Spinnaker

We all love to be beside the seaside, but how about 100 metres above the seaside?

Throughout the summer holidays (24^th July – 5th September), the 170 metre high Spinnaker Tower is celebrating the great British seaside as it fills its viewing decks with viewing deck chairs!

Regardless of the British weather Tower bosses are creating its own sunshine and with a team of Spinnaker yellow-coats and knobbly knees contests for the more adventurous visitors can’t help but roll their trousers up for holiday fun. The summer-long event sees the best of a traditional British seaside experience complete with colourful beach huts, sandcastles and even traditional ‘kiss me quick’ photo boards. Daily entertainment includes some good ol’ fashioned end of the pier fun with Punch ‘n’ Judy shows and Victorian bathers who will perform dazzling feats of dexterity and strength alongside the face painting, summertime story telling and treasure hunts.

Paul Mahy, Commercial Manager at The Spinnaker Tower, said: “The staff can’t wait to see all the knobbly knees that Portsmouth have to offer. We’ll all have ours out, so we hope people will get in the spirit of summer too!”

FABULOUS FAMILY EVENTS DURING 2010 AT ENGLISH HERITAGE’S CARISBROOKE CASTLE AND OSBORNE HOUSE

Fun, entertainment-packed days out are on offer in a brand new series of events at English Heritage’s Carisbrooke Castle and Osborne House.

From early July a themed programme of events – offering everything from outdoor music to a medieval weekend and from archaeology discovery days to Halloween ghost hunts – will keep the whole family happy. Plus of course, Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas on the Isle of Wight without the annual Osborne House Victorian Christmas event in November!
