Natural Born Swimmers

September 2011 Babies as young as a few weeks old will soon be able

to take part in new structured swimming lessons starting in Freshwater and Cowes this Autumn. The multi-award winning Water Babies classes are designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water, teaching confidence and safety techniques and enabling them to swim both above and below the waters’ surface.

‘Sadly, drowning is still the third highest cause of accidental death in the UK,’ explains Budge Pountney, director of Water Babies locally. A former rugby star, he set up Water Babies classes in September 2007, together with wife Ali, having been so impressed with the course when taking their own daughter, Naeve, to lessons in Northampton. ‘In most cases, it’s the shock of sudden submersion that causes children to panic. We believe that by introducing babies to water as early as possible, they’ll be less likely to experience fear if they did fall in.

‘With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or swimming to the nearest solid object, following a sudden submersion,’ he adds. ‘Last year alone we had three of our tiny clients save their own lives: one in an unheated pool, another in a canal and a third in a flood swelled stream. It’s fantastic what vital skills children can learn, despite still being so young. And it’s so important that they do. All of these children were just two when it happened.’

Jo Hobbs who has been swimming both her children with Water Babies in Southampton since September 2007 has now trained as a water babies teacher.

She will be running classes at West Wight Leisure Centre on a Monday and at UKSA in Cowes on a Thursday and Saturday.

For further information you can call Water Babies on 01983 717005 or email us humptydumpty@waterbabies.co.uk. Alternatively you can check out the water babies website on www.waterbabies.co.uk.

Linda and Ken Smith are proud to announce the launch of Dance with A Difference™, on 1st July 2011.

The winner In “The Best New Activity for Children” Category. in the prestigious http://www.whatson4littleones.co.uk

Dance with A Difference™ is a totally new concept in dance using music, movement and mime, where children have so much fun, They don’t even realise they’re learning which in turn encourages A lifelong passion in physical movement.

All programmes of Dance with A Difference™ are specifically formulated to fully support, compliment and reinforce the government OFSTED learning guidelines of The Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1

Linda (Founder of DWAD™ ) says: “Dance with A Difference™ has evolved over a period of 12 years. During those years, I have been in close consultation with nursery, pre-school, play school teachers and OFSTED inspectors, and with original music, designed programmes which all conform and compliment the government OFSTED, Early Years Foundation Stage and key stage 1 requirements, and is now ready to be made available to the general public to teach in Early Years Providers Settings under license.

These programmes are aimed at pre-school and primary school children, mainstream and special needs; and have been trialled at various Pre-School locations and Dance schools with very positive comments. The programmes have been devised in such a way that, whilst children are enjoying, through play, the Music, Movement and Mime aspects of the programmes, they are, without realising it, learning the skills that re-enforce and compliment the EYFS requirements and Key stage 1”

With the ever increasing emphasis on children’s social skills becoming especially challenging when coupled with the Government’s and Council’s inclusion policies with Mainstream and Special Needs children 1, and obesity levels rising 2, we have a problem. The government is concerned about the rise in obesity levels.

Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum said he was not at all surprised by the findings. He said “Children are more dedicated to sitting in their rooms playing on their computers and watching television than taking exercise. However, it is a huge challenge to come up with ways to make physical activity more fun, something that children’s imagination can latch on to”. 3 But Early Years Providers and schools are finding it increasingly harder to find exercises that encompass all levels of learning. Among doctors, dance therapy is drawing increased interest, especially for children with learning difficulties. Dance with A Difference™ is suitable for any child as it improves both physical and mental well-being, releasing endorphins which are the body’s natural ‘feel good’ chemicals, helping maintain physical fitness as well as helping to prevent and combat obesity and diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes in later life.

With the current unemployment situation where people are looking for businesses with affordable entry levels, coupled with a genuine need, Dance with A Difference™ has everything. Dance with A Difference™ can be for Mainstream, Special Needs, or, uniquely with Dance with A Difference™, work at its best when there is a combination of the two. They aim to provide, through a network of approved licensees, the facility to encourage children to develop a lifelong passion for physical movement.

Nutrition and Hayfever

The immune system’s inflammatory response can be modified through diet. It may be helpful to reduce foods that are inflammatory- meat, dairy and eggs for example – and increase foods that are anti-inflammatory such as oily fish, fruits/vegetables and certain spices and herbs. This was borne out in a 2007 study* which found that a ‘Mediterranean’ diet rich in fruits, vegetables and nuts improved allergic rhinitis and asthma symptoms in children. A good quality essential fatty acids supplement combining fish oil and evening primrose oil may also help reduce the body’s inflammatory response to allergens.

Reducing or eliminating foods which are not well tolerated may also help. For example, a history of blocked nose, catarrh, sore throat, tonsillitis, sinus or ear problems, raises the suspicion of dairy sensitivity. Dairy is renowned among alternative practitioners for its tendency to stimulate mucus production.

Histamine release can also be discouraged through nutritional means. Vitamin C, carotenoids and vitamin A, bromelain and quercetin all have natural anti-histamine action in the body and may help control hay fever symptoms. Bromelain is found in pineapples; quercetin can be found in citrus fruits, broccoli, capsicum, berries, onions, garlic and apples. Carotenoids can be widely found in spinach, carrots, tomatoes and green leafy vegetables. However, supplements which combine some of these natural anti-histamines in more concentrated form are now available.
