On 28th September Maggie Currie launched her new book entitled “What you believe creates yourreality” at Waterstones, Newport. 40 people turned out for the occasion and those that bought a bookhad it signed by the author. Maggie was inspired to write this book because of she own situation when she had no money, no self-esteemand no confidence and couldn’t see a way out and just want other people to know that there is a way to live the life that you want just by changing your attitude and that you are capable of doing so much more than you think. “In ten short chapters Maggie Currie will help you create the reality you want by simply changing whatyou believe…

Along the path to reshaping your reality. With practical exercises, case studies, aphorisms and positive affirmations, Maggie makes changing your reality a hands-on, step-by-step process. And with her own story to inspire and enthuse you, there’s simply no holding back…

Creating the reality you want starts right here, right now!” Buy the book, read it, take action – change your life! www.creedencetraining.co.uk

Help your child learn to love reading

Learning to read is the cornerstone of every child’s education. By reading aloud to your child, you will be sharing one of life’s most valuable gifts and opening all kinds of doors for the future

Involve your child. Let yourself be interrupted with questions; talk about what you think of the story and the pictures.

When your child has started learning to read, follow the text and encourage him or her to point to the words as you go along.

Establish a routine. Try to devote some time every day to reading.

Take your child to your local library and involve him or her in choosing books.

Notice what kinds of stories your child enjoys and look out for ones with similar themes.

When you are reading aloud, praise your child for listening well and sitting still. When your child is learning to read to you, give praise and encouragement too, but be sure to gently correct your child when he or she makes mistakes.

Help build your child’s vocabulary and memory skills by supplementing reading sessions with audio books on car journeys and after meals or at bedtime. Audio books are especially helpful in building memory skills and supporting the learning of dyslexic and autistic children.

Sharing your child’s journey into reading can be one of the most rewarding experiences of parenthood. You owe it to your child, and to yourself, to make it a priority in your daily life.

Isle of Wight based publisher Beachy Books have published their first children’s picture book called Jack and Boo’s Bucket of Treasures, following the adventures of two children collecting found treasures washed ashore by the sea. The book also includes a beach spotter guide and family seaside ideas.

Island residents, author and illustrator, Philip and Eleanor Bell, wrote the book to celebrate family beach trips in the Isle of Wight and the Sussex coast over the years. Philip says, “The story is inspired by my own observations of our children and my memories of happy days on the beach as a child.”

Eleanor says, “The visual style is very unique and came to us while looking back through our own family photos. I drew Jack and Boo using our children as a reference to give a realistic feel.”

The book has already had a successful book signing at Waterstones and more are planned this year, and the council have also just ordered copies to sell in all of the island’s tourist information centres.

The book is available to buy in local Waterstones and Tourist Information Centres, and via on-line bookshops. To find out more about Jack and Boo please visit www.beachybooks.com.

As part of World Book Day on Thursday 4 March, mums and dads as well as carers can join their children at one of three specially arranged ‘Family Learning Breakfasts’.

Isle of Wight Council has successfully secured three of only 15 national family breakfasts which will take place at Sandham Middle School, Oakfield Primary School and West Wight Youth and Community Centre.

The breakfasts are organised by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) and its aim is to provide opportunities for families to take part in activities that could lead to further interest in reading and learning as a family.

As well as breakfast being on offer, each day will also provide ‘quick read’ books. Quick reads are short, sharp shots of entertainment, in simple terms they are bite-sized books by bestselling writers and celebrities.

Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, the Quick Reads initiative is a major collaboration between many individuals and organisations including leading authors, publishers, government departments, education bodies, the Arts Council, libraries and many more.

The books have been widely used in Skills for Life lessons and for people learning English as a second language at colleges and community centres, libraries, prisons and workplaces across the country.

They’ve also been used in many other areas including hospitals, stroke recovery units, dyslexia centres, care homes and even Army and RAF bases.

Each event begins at 0800 and runs until 0845.

World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe

In this book we meet Percy and Polly who are taking that big step of going to school for the first time. In an amusing and friendly way, this book teaches children what they might expect when they reach that big day themselves. I would recommend that parents and children enjoy this book together before the big day arrives. Stephen Cartwright’s gently humorous illustrations make this a book that children will love. There are so many things to look at and talk about and of course there is that little yellow duck hiding on every page.

In the front cover there is the added feature of notes for parents. Here there is information which points out the two different levels of text within the book

How Usborne Books can help on World Book day

World Book day will soon be upon us and Usborne books organsiers all round the country are taking bookings for school/preschool book fairs. All primary school children will be given a £1 book token to use so this is an ideal time to arrnge an Usborne book event. Pre schools and secondary schools can apply for the vouchers. Usborne Book organisers arrange everything leaving teachers free to teach. You will have no bulky book cases and no paperwork. All we need is a space to put up the Usborne Book display and we ask schools to inform the parents. All round the country schools are getting lots of FREE books following succesful Usborne school book fairs. Some prefer to run the Usborne sponsored read/listen programme. Why not request a pack to find out how easy it is to get lots of free books by holding an Usborne Ready Steady Read or Ready Steady Listen.

World Book day is March 5th but we can redeem the vouchers between 16th February and 30th April so there is plenty of time to fit an Usborne event into your busy school calendar.
