Sandown Rock Climbing Wall

by Polly on February 26, 2009

Sandown Rocks is the fabulous new outdoor climbing wall set in the grounds of Sandown High School. The wall is designed to reflect the dramatic coloured sands of Alum Bay and remind us of the strong sailing history of the Island. The mainsail and foresail reach heights of nearly 10m…and our lofty spinnaker sail stretches to 12m! The view from the top is superb and the sense of achievement even better! Even the red squirrels in the nearby treetops seem bemused to see people abseiling down from above them!

The wall has been growing in popularity since its official opening in April 2008. Jake Meyer, the youngest British climber to scale Mount Everest chose to scale the Sandown heights to cut the opening ribbon. The summer of 2008 was a busy time at Sandown Rocks climbing wall. The instructor assessment day in August attracted over 60 volunteers to act as trainees for our newly trained climbing instructors. A tally at the end of August showed that over 1500 climbers had visited the climbing wall since it opened in 2007. The youngest climber so far is just 3 years old and the claim to fame for more mature climbers is just 78 years young!

The next Instructors course is scheduled for March 2009; please contact Senad Adams if you are interested in achieving this qualification. Already there are several school groups, army squadrons, local community groups and birthday parties (both adults and children) booked on the wall for Spring 2009.
